When I Teach

When I teach,

I take my students’ heads,

throw them to the ground,

and crack open their skulls.

I pour in the elixir:

a concoction of reflection, analysis, and action.

It’s flammable.

I grab the matchbox labeled “idea”

and strike.

Fire bursts from their minds into the sky.

Brilliant.

When my work is done,

I pack up my instruments

and screw their skulls on tight.

There’s more work to be done

tomorrow.
